Ukraine LIVE: Putin forced to tear up plans after attack on railroad hamstrings Russia | World | News

Russian forces have shelled the eastern city of Soledar in Donetsk 86 times in 24 hours, officials have reported, as Putin’s men ramp up their attacks in Donbas.

Serhiy Cherevatyi, Eastern Military Command spokesman, said on Tuesday that Russia had used multiple and “different artillery systems” to strike Soledar, six miles northeast of Bakhmut, and areas on the outskirts over 24 hours.

The eastern territory is now the focus of Russian advances, particularly among the Wagner Group forces stationed in Donetsk, as they look to make their first significant gain after months of bitter fighting.

While the strategic value of Soledar, and in turn Bakhmut, is unclear, Russian forces have relentlessly attacked the two cities since the summer, while Ukrainian forces have continually fortified defences.

Mr Cherevatyi said that Russia had “suffered colossal losses” in their attempts to capture Soledar but were still intent on trying to capture it.

Mr Cherevatyi also said that the goal of the Ukrainian military defending Soledar is to exhaust Russians, “so that even if they get a tactical win, it becomes a Pyrrhic victory”.

According to the UK Defense Ministry’s latest report, Russian forces and the Wagner Group have made tactical advances into Soledar and are likely in control of most of the settlement.
